Metric is a Canadian indie rock band formed in Toronto in 1998 by Emily Haines and James Shaw, later joined by Joshua Winstead and Joules Scott-Key. Originally called Mainstream, the group changed their name after releasing an early EP. Known for their energetic sound blending rock and electronic influences, Metric debuted with the album Old World Underground, Where Are You Now in 2003. Their breakout came with Live It Out in 2005, earning nominations for Canada’s top music prizes. Over the years, the band has released several acclaimed albums including Fantasies, Synthetica, Pagans in Vegas, Art of Doubt, Formentera, and Formentera II. They have received multiple Juno Awards and consistent recognition for their innovative style. In 2023, Metric was ranked among Rolling Stone's 50 Greatest Canadian Artists of All Time.
