War is an American band formed in Long Beach, California in 1969, originally known as Eric Burdon and War. Blending elements of R and B, funk, soul, jazz, and rock, the group drew inspiration from the diverse neighborhoods of Los Angeles. They rose to fame in the 1970s with major hits like Spill the Wine, The World Is a Ghetto, The Cisco Kid, Why Can't We Be Friends, Low Rider, and Summer. Their 1973 album The World Is a Ghetto became the best-selling album of that year according to Billboard. Known for their multicultural lineup and genre-crossing sound, War has seen several lineup changes over the years, with Leroy Lonnie Jordan the only original member remaining, while other former members now perform as the Lowrider Band.
