Metallica is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1981 by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich and later based in San Francisco. Known for fast tempos, powerful instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship, Metallica is recognized as one of the "big four" bands of thrash metal along with Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer. The lineup features Hetfield and Ulrich, lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo.
