Metallica is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1981 by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich and later based in San Francisco. Known for fast tempos, powerful instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship, Metallica is recognized as one of the "big four" bands of thrash metal along with Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer. The lineup features Hetfield and Ulrich, lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo.
Metallica gained major commercial success and critical acclaim with albums like Master of Puppets and their self-titled release, commonly known as The Black Album, which expanded their audience well beyond the metal scene. They have sold over 163 million albums worldwide and have won ten Grammy Awards. Notable events in the band's history include their legal battle against Napster and their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Metallica continues to influence rock and metal with a career spanning over four decades and a discography including eleven studio albums, most recently 72 Seasons, released in 2023.
