Alcest is a French band from Bagnols-sur-Cèze, formed and led by Neige, also known as Stéphane Paut. Originally a solo black metal project starting in 2000, Alcest gradually evolved as Neige incorporated shoegaze and post-metal influences into the music. After a brief period as a trio, Neige continued on his own until drummer Winterhalter joined in 2009. Alcest is recognized for pioneering the blackgaze genre, blending ethereal melodies with a metal foundation. Their albums, especially Le secret, Shelter, and Kodama, showcase their signature fusion of atmospheric soundscapes and heaviness.
