Freddie Mercury, born in 1946 in Zanzibar to Parsi-Indian parents, rose to international fame as the lead vocalist and pianist of Queen. Renowned for his powerful four-octave voice and flamboyant stage presence, he helped shape Queen’s unique sound and created many of their greatest hits, including Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are the Champions, and Somebody to Love. After moving to England in 1964, he formed Queen in 1970 with Brian May and Roger Taylor. Mercury’s theatrical style and ability to engage audiences made him an iconic figure in rock music, highlighted by unforgettable performances like Live Aid in 1985. He also pursued solo projects and collaborated with various artists. Diagnosed with AIDS in 1987, he continued to work until his death in 1991 at age 45. Mercury and Queen have received multiple major honors, including inductions into the Rock and Roll and Songwriters Halls of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of rock’s most influential and celebrated performers.
