Geinoh Yamashirogumi is a Japanese musical collective founded in 1974 by Tsutomu Ōhashi. Made up of hundreds of members from diverse backgrounds, the group is celebrated for their innovative approach to music, blending global folk traditions with modern sounds. They are particularly known for recreating Indonesian gamelan music with electronics, as well as fusing traditional Japanese and European influences. Their groundbreaking 1986 album Ecophony Rinne showcased their use of computer-generated sounds and led to their renowned work on the Akira soundtrack. The group’s name, inspired by Ōhashi’s pseudonym Shoji Yamashiro, reflects their roots as a performing arts collective.
