Gregg Allman

Gregg Allman

Gregg Allman was an influential American musician, singer, and songwriter best known as a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band. Born in Nashville in 1947, he developed an early love for rhythm and blues, which became a core element of the band's signature blend of rock, jazz, and country. Allman was the writer behind classics like Whipping Post, Melissa, and Midnight Rider. After the band's breakthrough with At Fillmore East in 1971 and the loss of his brother Duane, Allman helped continue their success with albums such as Brothers and Sisters. In addition to his work with the band, Allman enjoyed a notable solo career, highlighted by albums like Laid Back and the late-career Low Country Blues, as well as the hit single I’m No Angel. His distinctive soulful voice and mastery of the Hammond organ became hallmarks of Southern rock. Allman's life included public struggles with addiction, detailed in his memoir My Cross to Bear. He was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, and received a Grammy Award. Allman's final album, Southern Blood, was released after his death in 2017.
