Gustavo Santaolalla is an acclaimed Argentine composer, musician, and producer, celebrated for his signature minimalist style and influential contributions to Latin rock. Launching his career in the late 1960s with the pioneering band Arco Iris, he later became a key figure in the rock en español movement, producing for over a hundred artists and founding the neotango group Bajofondo. After relocating to Los Angeles during political unrest in Argentina, he expanded his reach into film, earning two consecutive Academy Awards for his scores for Brokeback Mountain and Babel. Santaolalla is also recognized for his work on film titles like The Motorcycle Diaries, Wild Tales, and the animated feature The Book of Life, as well as the iconic scores for the video game series The Last of Us and its television adaptation. Favoring traditional South American instruments and an instinctive, notation-free approach to composing, he seeks to evoke intimate, human emotion in his music. Santaolalla’s impressive career has been honored with multiple Grammys, Latin Grammy Awards, and the title of BMI Icon. He continues to inspire as both an artist and producer, and is also involved in winemaking.
