Keane is an English alternative rock band from Battle, East Sussex, formed in 1995. The group features Tom Chaplin on vocals, guitar, and piano, Tim Rice-Oxley on piano, synthesisers, bass, and backing vocals, Richard Hughes on drums and backing vocals, and Jesse Quin on bass, guitar, and backing vocals. Originally, the band also included guitarist Dominic Scott, who left in 2001. Keane rose to fame with their 2004 debut album Hopes and Fears, which topped the UK Albums Chart, won the Brit Award for Best British Album, and became one of the UK's best-selling albums ever. Their signature sound is defined by the use of keyboards as the primary instrument, setting them apart from most rock bands. Subsequent albums include Under the Iron Sea, Perfect Symmetry, Night Train, and Strangeland, with several reaching number one in the UK. The band took a break after releasing their 2013 compilation The Best of Keane, returning in 2019 with the album Cause and Effect and the single The Way I Feel. Known for their melodic songwriting and distinctive use of piano and synthesizers, Keane has sold over 13 million records worldwide and earned recognition as one of the leading British bands of the 2000s.
