Ministry is an influential American industrial metal band formed in Chicago in 1981 by Al Jourgensen, who remains the group’s driving force and only constant member. Originally starting as a synth-pop act, Ministry shifted in the late 1980s to become a pioneering force in industrial rock and metal. The band reached commercial success with albums like The Land of Rape and Honey, The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste, and Psalm 69, the last of which became their biggest hit and went platinum.
Throughout its history, Ministry has featured a rotating lineup of notable musicians from across the alternative and metal scenes, including Paul Barker, Mike Scaccia, Jello Biafra, and members of bands such as Killing Joke and Static X. Known for its aggressive sound and politically charged lyrics, the band experienced both critical acclaim and controversy, especially with its “Bush Trilogy” albums released in the mid-2000s.
Despite multiple hiatuses and lineup changes, including the loss of longtime guitarist Mike Scaccia, Ministry has continued to release new material, including recent albums AmeriKKKant, Moral Hygiene, and Hopiumforthemasses. Ministry’s legacy includes six Grammy nominations and performances at major festivals like Lollapalooza and Wacken Open Air, cementing their status as trailblazers in heavy and industrial music.
