NWA was a pioneering American hip-hop group from Compton, California, formed in 1987. Regarded as one of the most influential acts in hip hop, NWA played a vital role in defining the gangsta rap subgenre. Their bold lyrics tackled issues of racism and police brutality, igniting significant controversy and leading to bans from many major radio stations. Despite this, they sold over ten million albums in the United States.
The group’s original lineup featured Arabian Prince, Dr Dre, Eazy E, Ice Cube, DJ Yella, and MC Ren. Their major releases include the groundbreaking Straight Outta Compton in 1989 and Niggaz4Life in 1991, the latter making history as the first hardcore rap album to top the Billboard 200 chart. Members such as Dr Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy E, and MC Ren went on to successful solo careers.
NWA’s raw commentary and revolutionary production made a lasting impact on hip hop, influencing generations of artists and broadening the genre’s reach. Their legacy includes induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024.
