Richard Thompson, born in 1949, is an influential English singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He rose to fame as a founding member of Fairport Convention in the late 1960s, helping to shape British folk rock as both a guitarist and songwriter. After leaving Fairport Convention, he launched a solo career and then collaborated with his then-wife Linda Thompson, releasing several acclaimed albums such as I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight and Shoot Out the Lights. Following their split, Thompson returned to solo work, building a respected catalog of eighteen studio albums. Known for his lyrical depth and virtuoso guitar work, Thompson has received multiple Grammy nominations, an Ivor Novello Award, a BBC Radio lifetime achievement award, and was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his contributions to music.
