Steve Lacy was an American jazz saxophonist and composer celebrated for his mastery of the soprano saxophone. Emerging in the 1950s as an innovative figure in progressive dixieland jazz, he built a long, influential career marked by melodic and structured experimental jazz. Lacy was known for his distinctive compositions, often centered around minimalist, repeating motifs. A key aspect of his work was his deep engagement with the music of Thelonious Monk, which became a signature part of his repertoire, frequently performed alongside trombonist Roswell Rudd.
